Altoids Art and ConWorks

Consolidated Works kicks off the new year with some of the most dynamic programming of 2003. Two exhibits allow the viewer fresh visual stimuli from the Contemporary Art scene. Curators Meg Schiffler & Brian Wallace offer Filter/Sorta in one gallery while the other space contains the 5th Annual Exhibition of the Altoids Collection of contemporary art.

Critical Reaction to the Exhibitions: On Filter/Sorta

“In Time and Place, Seattle artist Phil Roach gives us a glimpse into what it would be like in someone's living room during prime time. Little wooden houses are attached to the wall and are given a small peephole, where the viewer looks into a pre-fab living room, complete with a big-screen TV. All the while you can hear (via headphones) the everyday domestic sounds of someone washing the dishes, talking and general human clatter. Then there are the images on the “televisions;” Roach has hooked up cameras to project what is going on in various areas of ConWorks so that the idea of necessary surveillance really hits home.” Karla Esquivel and Friends,

On the 5th Annual Altoids Exhibit

"Time's up for dragging thrift-store paintings into galleries, but an exception should be made for Wayne White's "Heinies N' Shooters w/Hotties at Hooters." Across a thrift-store lithograph of a forest, he painted his title in shimmering pastels, providing the razzle-dazzle necessary to wake this corpse."
I love Malia Jensen's "Walnut Bedjacket," a satin dressing gown for a walnut tree. Only God can make a tree, but only artists can wrap them in mind-blowing sex, jokes and glamour.” Regina Hackett, Art Critic, Seattle P-I, 2/22/2003

Congratulations to Matthew Richter, founder and executive director of this local arts center; Consolidated Works was presented with a 2002 Rudy Award, one of 12 such awards granted nationwide by the locally based Safeco Insurance, to "individuals who provide extraordinary leadership in the non-profit sector.” Consolidated Works will receive $5,000 for that worthy cause.
