Works by Paul Garvini

Paul Garvarni

(b. Paris, 13 Jan. 1894;

d. Paris, 24 Nov. 1866)

This French lithographer and painter was one of the most highly esteemed artists of the 19th century. Like his contemporary, Daumier, he produced 4000 lithographs for satirical journals and fashion magazines. He received accolades from the critics of his era: Balzac, Gautier, Sainte-Beuave and Jules Janin. In 1851 he was befriended by Edmond and Jules Goncourt and is mentioned frequently in their famous Journaux. He specialized in genre scenes where the protagonists are usually young women. His romantic treatment of episodes from the bohemian realm made him a favorite with the public.
