"Language is both a bridge and a barrier. It can be truthful and revealing as well as deceive and manufacture. The seminal origins of language may be a learned/conditioned experience, or there may be an inherent conceptual framework for how concepts and syntax interlock. Different dialects and lexicons only further the divisions between individuals and cultures."
Matt McCarthy, artist
Matt McCarthy shows his drawings at the King County Art Gallery this October. Image overlays printed text from several languages. The text becomes a compelling element in the work, not for its specific meaning, but for its visual structure. The relationship between a particular image and text from a particular language guides our interpretation of the work. This post-structuralist system gives the viewer an opportunity to find meaning in the works on terms which create unique meaning. The gallery is a space that is transformed into an area of solace and reflection.
About Matt McCarthy:
McCarthy, a founding member of Dent Artist's Collective, received his education at Cornish College of the Arts. He has shown work at Cornish, Whatcom Museum, Back Door Space, and College of the Sequoias.
About The King County Art Gallery:
The King County Art Gallery provides emerging King County artists with solo or small group exhibitions in a professional gallery setting. It supports innovative work and art forms that are under-represented in galleries. Please come and enjoy the works of emerging artists that can't be seen anywhere else. The King County Gallery is unique because it takes no commission on work sold. It is a great opportunity for people to buy directly from the artist before a commercial gallery represents them.
Gallery Hours and Location:
The King County Art Gallery is located within the King County Office of Cultural Resources, at 506 Second Avenue, Suite 200, in the Smith Tower building in downtown Seattle. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm; the gallery is open and free to the public.
